Gavin Lee Redfern-Jones reports on our latest league match
For the second time in October, Bangor 1876 made the journey down to Mid Wales. Their destination was the Recreation Ground, the home of Caersws FC. Their previous visit to the Rec at the tail-end of August yielded a penalty shoot-out victory for Michael Johnston's men as they booked their place in the quarter-final of the Northern section of the Welsh Blood Service League Cup, at the expense of the Bluebirds.
However, points were on offer this time around as both teams faced each other in a JD Cymru North fixture. Bangor headed into the game in sixth place in the league standings, following last-minute defeats to both Penrhyncoch and Denbigh Town. Caersws sat in eighth position with a game in hand, following recent victories over Guilsfield and Buckley Town.
Bangor came close to taking the lead on the quarter-hour mark when James Barry's cut-back cross from the left wing was blocked and looped into the air and into the left side of the penalty box. Waiting at the bottom of the ball’s descent was Dale Davies, whose back header found Corrig McGonigle operating near the penalty spot. Closely marked by Caersws's Harry Cottam, the Bangor ace attempted a wrap-around volley as he fell to the ground, but the effort was guided wide of the left post.
Half-way through the first half, McGonigle was involved again when his 35-yard outswinging free-kick from the left channel found Corey Jones attacking at the far-post. The centre-back’s header on the run was directed back across the face of goal but could not find the back of the net, instead going out for a goal kick.
Five minutes later, Bangor keeper Bradley Farrar was called into action. After slipping in behind Bangor's defensive line on the right wing, Caersws's Rhys Hesden headed for the byline and attempted to pick out a team-mate with a low pass, but Farrar was able to stop the ball dead in its tracks and claim it at the near-post.
With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, a one-two pass with McGonigle saw Mason Blackwell-Jones break into the penalty box. With only the keeper to beat, he rolled the ball underneath the body of the onrushing Max Williams. The effort looked destined to give Bangor the lead, but the quick reactions of Caersws captain Harry Cottam meant he was able to retreat in time to clear the ball off the line.
The whistle blew for half-time and the sides went into the break goalless.
HALF-TIME: CAERSWS FC 0 - 0 BANGOR 1876 FC
Seven minutes after the restart, Tom Mahoney’s lofted ball found winger Barry with space on the left flank. His cutback inside opened up a shooting angle from the corner of the penalty box. Barrys' right-footed effort curled towards the top left corner, but Caersws stopper Williams was able to parry it away for a corner kick.
Minutes after the hour mark saw Caersws's best opportunity to open the scoring when a right corner kick taken Craig Williams was met in the air by centre back Cottam at the far post. His header was directed towards the top left corner and required the reflexes of Bangor goalkeeper Farrar to tip the ball over the crossbar for another Caersws corner.
As the game neared the final quarter-hour, Bangor substitute Joe Sullivan won the ball in the middle of the park and found himself operating on the right flank following a one-two pass with right back Cai Powell-Roberts. Sullivan’s cross found McGonigle in the penalty box with his back towards goal. After taking a touch to steady the ball, McGonigle quick one-eighty turn meant he was able to get his shot away on goal, but his effort travelled straight at Bluebirds keeper Williams and was cleared to safety.
The referee blew the whistle for full time with either side unable to break the deadlock.
