On Saturday 28 September, we welcome Gresford Athletic for a home league match that kicks off at 2.30pm.
At the time of writing, Gresford are currently thirteenth in the league with seven points from eight games. However, they come into this game having beaten Prestatyn 9-0 in a Welsh Cup match last weekend and after winning 1-0 at home to Guilsfield the previous weekend. They rounded off August with 3-0 victory at home to Denbigh Town.
Gresford are certainly not opponents to be taken lightly given both their recent form and the fact that they twice won in Bangor last season. They won 3-0 in the Nathaniel MG Cup on 5 August 2023. All their goals came in the second half and they were scored by Charley Edge, Sam Spridgeon, and Haci Ozlu. On 29 September 2023, they returned to win 3-1 at our home ground in the JD Cymru North thanks to goals from Haci Ozlu, Toby Gallagher-Keenan, and Sam Sprigeon. Corrig McGonigle scored for 1876.
Despite these two defeats at home to Gresford last term, we won 3-1 in our league match away to Gresford on 2nd February 2024 at the Rock in Cefn. Corrig McGonigle opened the scoring with a penalty midway through the first half before Haci Ozlu equalised early in the second half. A second goal from Corrig McGonigle and another from Mason Blackwell-Jones midway through the second half secured the win.
As Gresford Athletic mentioned on their club website recently, 22nd September this year marked the 90th anniversary of the Gresford Colliery Disaster in which an underground explosion cost the lives of 266 miners. This tragic event is commemorated in a memorial in the town near to the Clappers Lane ground at which Gresford used to play their home games.
We were very saddened to learn of the passing away of Gresford Athletic under-10s player Freddie Pritchard. We would like to express our condolences to Freddie’s family and friends, as well as everyone at Gresford Athletic. There will be a minute’s silence prior to this Saturday’s game.
