Second half goals make the difference

Gavin Lee Redfern-Jones reports on our first home league match of the season.

For their first competitive home game of the season, Bangor 1876 hosted Mold Alexandra in a JD Cymru North league match. On a cool August afternoon, both teams were looking to add to their opening day victories against Colwyn Bay and Llandudno respectively.

It was the away side who felt they should have had an opportunity for an opening just after the quarter-hour mark. A tackle from behind by Bangor full-back Daniel Cox inside the box prompted appeals from the Mold technical area, but the referee deemed it a fair challenge and waved away any shouts for a penalty.

Ten minutes later, it was Bangor's turn to come close for an opening goal. Good interplay on the right flank between midfielder Mason Blackwell-Jones and Cai Powell-Roberts saw the right-back deliver a cross that was just beyond the reach of a stretching Dale Davies.

Minutes later, the referee would wave away another appeal, this time from the home side. Centre-back Jake Ellison's head connected with a Blackwell-Jones corner delivery. The ball was headed into the ground and then crashed against the underside of the crossbar and cleared off the line. There were shouts from Bangor players who were adamant that the ball was handled off the line by Mold's Ryan Coney, but the score remained level.

With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Mold were awarded a free-kick just outside of the box after a foul by Ellison. Up stepped opposing centre-back Craig Rogers to take the free-kick. His effort cleared the Bangor wall but was safely collected by Bangor goalkeeper Carl Jones. The referee blew his whistle to call for the half-time break with both sides unable to break the deadlock.

HALF-TIME: BANGOR 1876 0 - 0 MOLD ALEXANDRA

Bangor would threaten early after the restart when Craig Whelan latched onto the ball following a feign from Blackwell-Jones. Upon driving into the penalty box, Whelan's right-footed shot would take a deflection from a Mold defender's attempt to block, but the flight of the ball was still heading goalwards. Molds' stopper Joseph Smith showed good reactions to claw the ball away from the net.

Moments later, Bangor were awarded a corner when a lofted ball from the halfway line by centre-back Corey Jones found Blackwell-Jones on the right channel, whose shot was blocked out of play for a corner. The midfielders' corner-kick was slightly overhit but was kept in play on the far side by Dale Davies. Fending off a challenge from two Mold players, Davies was able to pick out Liam Morris offering support from a slightly deeper position. Picking up the recycled ball, the winger sent an outswinging early cross towards the far post, where it was met by defender Jones on the volley and found the back of the net. Unfortunately, the goal was disallowed for an offside decision.

Morris was involved again 5 minutes later when a pass from midfielder Dion Jones left him isolated against Alexandras' Morgan Roberts on the left wing. Faking a cross to get himself an extra yard on the defender, the winger went round the outside of Roberts and unleashed a bullet of a shot from just inside the box. The effort on goal could only find the side-netting.

Bangor finally took the lead on the hour-mark when Powell-Roberts picked out Dale Davies operating on the right-wing. The forward played a flat cross which was met at the centre of the goal by Morris who applied a volleyed finish for Bangor's first goal of the night.Morris almost had a second goal minutes later when he backtracked to get on the end of a pullback pass on the right byline by Davies. But his powerful effort was inches over the bar.

Midfielder Tom Mahoney doubled Bangors' lead just shy of the 70th-minute mark. After having his inital effort on the right channel smothered by Mold stopper Smith, the ball came back to his feet and Mahoney was able to take a second bite of the cherry and rolled the ball just inside the near post before the goalkeeper was able to reposition himself back in goal.

Mold's evening went from bad to worse when they were reduced to 10 men on the 78th minute. An already-booked Taylor Edwards was given a straight red card after he was judged to have stamped Bangor substitute Harry Galeotti during a pause in play.

As the game entered the final 10 minutes, Tomos Clarkes' floated pass picked out Galeotti breaking into the box. The forward opted to cushion a header back out of the box and to the feet of Morris, who took a touch to steady the ball before firing a shot towards the top-left corner. The attempt drew out a good save on stretch by Joseph Smith.

With just 5 minutes of regular time remaining, a one-two pass between Powell-Roberts and Mahoney saw the full-back with space to attack on the right wing. As he reached the edge of the box, his dinked cross found Galeotti on the far side. Chesting the ball down to take it out of the air, the winger struck a half-volley which took a slight deflection from a Mold defender before beating Smith at his near post, giving Bangor their third goal of the night.

The referee blew the full-time whistle as Bangor earned themselves a win following three unanswered goals in the second half.
