WINNING START IN TIER 3 FOR 1876
At a sunny Treborth, a good crowd was present to see Bangor 1876 play their first ever league match in tier 3.
In a lively start, 1876 had the first chance after a free-kick from left by Sion Edwards stung the palms of visiting goalkeeper Lewys Thomson-Williams.
Not long afterwards the visitors had a chance of their own when Coel Lambert broke into the right side of the box but his shot was saved well by the legs of Cian Thomas.
As it looked like the game would reach the quarter hour mark with no goals on the board, Tom Clarke broke the deadlock in the 14th minute with a downward header following a cross by Jamie Petrie.
A minute later, Corrig McGonigle doubled 1876's advantage from close range after he was found in space in the right side of the penalty area. McGonigle then added a third goal for 1876 in as many minutes with a sharp finish.
There was no let up as 1876 continued to press for further goals with Liam Thomas forcing a good save from Thomson-Williams before Corrig McGonigle came close to completing a rapid-fire hat-trick. The attacker from Anglesey again came close after half an hour when he won the ball on the edge of the area but his shot was blocked.
In the final ten minutes of the opening period, 1876 continued to press and only some last ditch defending from the visitors kept the ball out following a goalmouth scramble.
Six minutes before the break Corrig McGonigle completed his hat-trick. Although his first effort was well saved by the visiting goalkeeper, he found the net after the ball was played back to him by Jamie Petrie. A minute later, McGonigle was again looking lively but headed just over from a left wing cross by Sion Edwards.
HALF-TIME: Bangor 1876 4-0 Rhydymwyn
Just after half-time, Rhydymwyn came close to reducing the deficit when Nathan Mendoza broke into the left side of the penalty area and cut inside, but his shot was well parried by Cian Thomas. Minutes later a last gasp tackle by Kian Owen denied the same player after he rounded the home goalkeeper.
In the 52nd minute, Bangor 1876 scored a fifth when visiting central defender Connor Whelan turned the ball into his own net when attempting to clear a shot from Liam Morris
Shortly afterwards, Liam Morris was again in action as he shot just wide after a cut back from Sion Edwards. On the hour mark, Thomas again came close after a neat pass from Joe Culshaw. However, his powerful effort was parried for a corner by visiting keeper Thomson-Williams.
Morris's search for a goal continued and shortly afterwards he came close again after good link-up play with Corrig McGonigle but his shot was saved by the legs of the visiting goalkeeper.
With 20 minutes left, Liam Morris had better luck as the ball was played across to him at the right side of the area by substitute Harry Galeotti. He took a touch to cut inside before firing a low left-footed shot into the net for 1876's sixth goal.
Three minutes later the visitors got a goal back when a floated free-kick into the box by Iwan Rogers eluded Cian Thomas and crossed the line before Tom Clarke could clear.
Inside the final ten minutes, Corrig McGonigle thought he had added his fourth and 1876's seventh but hud effort was disallowed for offside.
With five minutes to go, McGonigle again went close but his shot from just outside the box went narrowly over the bar. Moments later, Ben Owen was the latest to try his luck as he almost scored with a deft chip before McGonigle again shot narrowly wide.
With two minutes left, 1876 added a seventh when Harry Galeotti played the ball to Gethin Thomas on the right side of the penalty area. The substitute found the net with a powerful right-footed shot.
In the final minute, Corrig McGonigle completed the scoring with a header after a Harry Galeotti cross was nodded back to him by Liam Morris.
