Bangor 1876's Les Davies has expressed his delight at being voted Sgorio's player of the decade. He has told this website that "it feels great to have won with all the talent that has been around at the same time". He also expressed his thanks to everyone who voted for him.
The player, who was on the 32-man list of nominees for UEFA's 2012 Best Player in Europe award, has been looking back on his highlights of the last ten years. He said that his standout moments include "winning the Welsh Premier and three Welsh Cups with Bangor and also getting into Europe with Bangor, Connah’s Quay, and Bala”. Les was also keen to pay tribute to his teammates and coaches, adding “I couldn’t have done it without the other players and the management I’ve had along the way”.
Bangor football fans have been quick to praise the Maesgeirchen marksman following his award. Joe Shooman has heralded Les Davies as someone “who knows what Bangor football means” and is now “passing on his skills and love for Bangor to a new generation”.
Matthew Shooman saw things in similar terms to his brother Joe, arguing that “Les Davies represents everything that football means to the people of Bangor”. He described Les as “a local lad who plays with a passion and commitment that us fans love to see”. Matthew added that Les is “a scorer of great goals on the pitch and a wonderful ambassador off it”.
Several other fans have talked about talked about Les’s popularity and status as a local hero. Les Pegler, who was doubtlessly pleased at a fellow Les being recognised, described Les Davies as “Bangor through and through, born and bred, a local boy who’s done well”. He added that Davies is “well-loved and one of our own”.
Having already scored 13 goals for Bangor 1876 so far this season, Les Davies is clearly thriving at Treborth following his return to the city where he made his name. Shortly after the award announcement, he said “I’ve not felt so alive and enjoyed my football as much for a while”. He continued by saying that “with all the fans, players, members of the board, and staff, it feels like the old days at Bangor”. “I’m feeling great and looking forward to the challenges ahead”, he added.
