Luke Steele talks about his highlights of the season, playing in goal as a youngster, and a Bangor 1876 teammate who has a talent for dancing
How would you describe the season so far?
As soon as I signed in June I knew this season was going to be a memorable one, but it’s surpassed all of my expectations. It's involved walking out at FC United to see what seemed like a sea of blue in the stands to playing in a top of the table clash in Trearddur Bay in what felt like a hurricane! There have also been low points like losing two on the bounce against Llanrwst and Ruthin but I’m sure all the lads would agree that those two games only made us a stronger side and motivated us more to go on unbeaten afterwards which is a great achievement in itself. At the start of the season it was made clear to all of us that the main goal was to win the league and so when we received the news the other day that we were crowned champions we were all buzzing! That being said, we didn’t win it quite the way we imagined but under the circumstances we can’t complain. Hopefully, when it’s safe we can all get together and celebrate what’s been a massively successful first season for 1876!
Although you've mainly played in midfield this season, you've also played in the centre of defence and on the wing. What's it like playing in different positions?
From a young age, I’ve always been a versatile player. I actually started out playing in goal for Pwllheli’s junior team at 5 years old! But growing up and idolising Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United inevitably made me want to become a winger and so my time in between the sticks didn’t last that long! In the two years I spent at Wrexham’s academy, I played mostly on the wing and at fullback. Then when i went back to Bangor’s academy, Chris Jones, who was funnily my coach then as well, started playing me in a more central position either in the midfield or at centre back. So playing different positions is nothing new to me really and it's something that i enjoy!
Of the three goals you've scored this season, do you have a favourite?
It’s got to be between the volley against Llanystumdwy in early November or my first 1876 goal, the one that put us ahead against Llanelwy Athletic at Belle Vue. I’ve chosen them for polar opposite reasons, my goal against Llanystumdwy in November is one of my all time favourites because it’s a volley that flew into the top corner, and a bonus was that a couple of my mates were playing against me that day so I was able to rub it in when i saw them on the Monday in college! But the goal against Llanelwy is just as memorable because of what it meant to the team. It was 1-1 and if I remember rightly we weren’t at our the best during the first half and then I scored at the back post to put us ahead and help get us into the draw for the next round of the cup.
Like several Bangor 1876 players, coaches and fans, you've recently run a virtual marathon in seven days to raise money for the Lily Foundation. What was it like?
Even before the Virtual marathon Iwan Williams had set up a “Pandemic running club” for 1876 on Strava so every week there was a bit of competition as to who would get the fastest 10k times etc so I was already running regularly anyway to keep fit. So when Paul Templer asked if I’d be interested it was a no-brainer! Because I’d kept myself ticking over since our last game I didn’t think the it would be that bad, but the weather had other ideas... It felt like it was a good 40 degrees when I was running a half marathon on the Sunday to finish off the Virtual Marathon! But I’m glad we all managed to do it and helped raise a lot of money and awareness in little time. So I’m glad that I was able to play a part to help!
How have you been coping with the lack of football due to the lockdown?
It’s been really weird! Since a really young age, every day has been about football from the moment I get out of bed to when I go sleep, whether that's training, playing at school, matches on a weekend, kick-about down at the astro with my mates or watching matches on Sky Sports. I struggle to think of what people who don’t like football do in their spare time! At the moment I’m trying to keep myself ticking over with the fitness through going on runs regularly because I’m dreading the pre-season beastings from Mel and Dyl!
What are you looking forward to most about resuming football when it's safe to do so?
Without a doubt, the changing room banter! I’ve really missed the crack with all the lads before training and matches. Hopefully there will be some sort of time to have a moider between the hill sprints in pre-season. But I'm really looking forward to a get together with all the boys when it's safe to celebrate the season and to see Matty Lock dancing again! Until then I want to wish everyone well and hopefully see you all soon at Treborth!
