Jamie Petrie interview

Jamie Petrie interview

Jonathan Ervine28 Mar 2020 - 16:19

“The fans and people involved with this club make every game a pleasure”

He's scored plenty of goals this season, but Jamie Petrie is keen to emphasise the team ethic of Bangor 1876 and pay tribute to teammates, fans, and everyone involved with Bangor 1876. Read more in this interview...

What was it that made you decide to join Bangor 1876 this season?
It’s an incredibly special thing that has been created in such a short space of time. But before it even started Bangor meant a lot to me. I had some amazing years at Bangor City which I feel I really benefited from, but I felt that I wasn’t able to fully repay the club and people for their support. Unfortunately, after breaking my leg I spent a lot of time in the stands and to be honest, never managed to regain full fitness due to numerous operations. But during that time, the Bangor fans and so many people involved with the club were incredibly supportive towards me and really helped me. I was gutted to leave the club without in some way repaying the support and kindness I’d been shown. So as soon as Bangor 1876 was created (and Johno got on the phone!) I was keen to be involved. If I help even in the slightest it’ll hopefully repay some of the support I was given.

What have been your highlights of the season so far?
It’s hard to pick specific highlights. Of course the FC United game was something special and there have been a few peaks so far but the fans and people involved with this club make every game a pleasure to be involved in. It’s great to see hundreds of 1876 fans following us away from home, or in sideways rain at Treborth, and celebrating together in local pubs after away games. It’s all just amazing memories that I know none of us will forget. I’m just proud to be a part of it.

Despite the fact we've not played for several weeks and also had a few postponements before then, you've already scored almost 50 goals this season. Have you ever scored this many goals in a season before?
No! Not since I was an under-8 probably! Without it sounding like a cliché though, 90% of these goals have been team goals. I’ve just been there with the last touch. We have a very talented squad who (except for a few of us fossils) will no doubt go on to have really successful careers in football.

Of all the goals this season, do you have a favourite?
Yes but none of them are mine! Matty Lock’s last second equaliser against Penycae made that into an amazing day. And Dylan Summers-Jones’s two goals away at Trearddur Bay as well, he was unplayable that day and won us the game.

How are you coping with enforced break from football at the moment?
Not very well. It’s a bizarre and scary scenario for everyone and being on lockdown is no good for your fitness especially when you’re in your thirties! You can put on weight just looking at the fridge! Hopefully we can finish the season strongly once normality resumes. But the only thing that matters right now is the health and safety of everyone involved with the club. Stay safe!
