It has been an exciting season for Bangor 1876’s youth teams. Read more in this interview with our head of youth Ifan Thomas…
How would you describe the season so far for the teams which make up our youth section?
It has been a very challenging season, especially due to Covid and the restrictions that are in place. Our under-13 and under-12 teams that were formed before this season have made a really strong start in their leagues. I have to say that the coaches of these age groups are doing a great job with the children in these squads.
The under-7 and under-11 teams are new this season, and there are very talented players in both sides. They have been competing well in all their games. We are still looking for coaches to help with these age groups in order to ensure that they get the chance to train and play games regularly. Full support will be available to anyone who is interested.
Are there some teams who are currently looking for players?
Our under-7s team is also looking for more players at the moment. The most important thing at this age level is that children have FUN and ENJOY playing football. If anyone is interested in joining, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Covid has had a noticeable impact on football in Wales this season. Has it had an impact on the youth teams?
Covid has had a big impact on our youth teams, with coaches, players and parents having to self-isolate or suffering from Covid-19, and this has meant we have had to postpone many of the games and training sessions. It has also prevented us from having face to face meetings between the coaches and the parents, which has been very frustrating. I hope we’re now starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
When you were growing up, who was your favourite player?
When I was young, my favourite player was Tim Cahill of Everton. He was a player who was delighted to play for Everton, always gave 100% and scored very important goals for the team. What we would give to have a player like him in Everton’s first team at the moment!
Do you have a final message for everyone who is interested in the activities of our youth section?
If anyone has any enquiries about the Bangor 1876 youth section, you are welcome to contact me (e-mail: development@bangor1876.com). Thank you to everyone for the support so far.
