Young defender on playing for Welsh Schools and Bangor 1876

How did you find out you'd been selected to represent the Welsh Schools team and what did it feel like?
My dad actually came up to me and said he had been in contact with Jiws (Marc Lloyd-Williams), who is the current manager of Welsh Schools. I was supposed to be playing in a trial match that week against a team in England but it was cancelled because of the weather at the time. I was gutted because it was a trial game to decide if I was going to Italy with the squad or not, but thanks to Jiws who trusted me and other people’s opinion I got picked to travel to Italy with Welsh Schools. I was thankful for the opportunity to represent not only my country but my school and club, it really felt amazing.

What was it like preparing for and playing in the matches in Italy and Northern Ireland?
Preparing for the matches in Italy and the Northern Ireland game was very different to what I usually do to prepare for a game. The training sessions leading up to the game were short sessions based on our game plan and how to break the other team down. We also prepared by having some foam rolling sessions to make sure that we were 100% ready for the game, and also prepared mentally by having team meetings before the game which was new to me. When I got selected in the starting 11 for the match against Italy, at first I was very nervous because I didn’t know what to expect and the standard I was about to play, but when I stepped on the pitch I was excited and confident about the game. And for the Northern Ireland game, I felt more nervous than I did for the games in Italy because the Centenary Shield is something big for Welsh Schools and something they want to win but again when I stepped on the pitch I was full of confidence and excitement.

You scored in the match against Italy. Can you tell us about your goal.
I really didn’t expect to get on the pitch and score in the match against Italy. Obviously as a defender the first thing you think about is defending your own goal. But when we had that free kick and I was going up to the opposition box I wasn’t expecting to score, especially a header since I have never scored a header before. The feeling of scoring on my debut against Italy was an amazing feeling and something I’ll never forget.

What has it been like being part of Bangor 1876 this season?
I have played for Bangor since a very young age. When I first attended the meeting about this club I was very interested in the club and their goal for the future and I wanted to be part of that. To sign for Bangor 1876 was a no-brainer because I wanted to be part of something big and exciting. To be part of the squad this season is great because we have a good squad and staff. I am excited to finish this season off and carry on with the journey with this club.

You played in the centre of defence against Llysfaen in the NWCFA Junior Cup quarter-final recently. What was that like?
Playing at centre back against Llysfaen was something I hoped for because centre back is my preferred position and I’ve been playing at right back this season, which i have enjoyed. But I have been waiting for the opportunity to play at centre back to show what I can do. The game against Llysfaen was a physical game and I think I took that well and it was a different experience playing in that type of game. The Junior Cup is a cup we want to win and I hope I can have another opportunity to play at centre back and help the team to win the cup.

How have you been coping with the lack of football due to the Coronavirus situation?
It’s been very hard coping with the lack of football recently because of the coronavirus situation, but I am still focused on football and preparing myself for when the season starts back.
