FAW Trophy win at Llanystumdwy

Jonathan Ervine2 Oct 2022 - 07:30

Liam Morris hat-trick in ten goal victory

Bangor 1876 progressed to the next round of the FAW Trophy with a big win away to tier 5 side Llanystumdwy. The scoring got underway inside the first five minutes when a Corrig McGonigle cross from the left was turned in at the back post by Liam Morris. Not long after the opener, Les Davies and Cameron Barry both went close to doubling 1876’s lead.

A second goal did arrive before the ten minute mark and it was scored by Gethin Thomas. The midfielder from Llanrug broke through the middle and although his initial effort was saved by Llanystumdwy goalkeeper Elgan Roberts, Thomas tucked away the rebound.

Still inside the first quarter hour, Liam Morris came close to adding a third when we rounded the goalkeeper but his shot from a tight angle was cleared off the line. At the other end, the hosts almost got a goal back from an unlikely source. A free-kick from just outside the centre circle was floated into the box and bounced on the top of the crossbar on the way over.

Just after the half hour mark, a quick-fire double put Bangor 1876 into a more comfortable position. Sion Edwards broke down the left and his cross was controlled by Les Davies, who then found the net with a low shot. Four minutes later, Les Davies headed in another cross from Sion Edwards for his second and Bangor’s fourth goal of the afternoon.

Davies was unlucky not to complete a first half hat-trick when he got his head to another cross from Sion Edwards, but Elgan Roberts tipped the ball over the bar. Corey Jones also went close shortly afterwards when he headed against the bar following a corner from Corrig McGonigle.

A fifth goal for Bangor 1876 arrived in the final minute of the half. A long throw-in from Kian Owen on the left landed right on the head of Corrig McGonigle who nodded in from close range.

HALF-TIME: Llanystumdwy 0-5 Bangor 1876

Inside the opening five minutes of the second period, Bangor 1876 added to their tally. Les Davies played the ball right to Liam Morris, who cut inside on his left foot before scoring with a powerful curling effort across goal.

Llanystumdwy continued to apply themselves and came close to scoring just after the hour mark when Guto Roberts fired in a shot from just outside the box that went narrowly wide. Not long afterwards, 1876 went up the other end and added a seventh. Les Davies played the ball towards Corrig McGonigle, who lobbed the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to allow Harry Galeotti to net from close range.

As the final quarter hour of the match approached, 1876 scored again and for the second time it was a long throw-in from the left that created the goal. On this occasion, the thrower was second half substitute Shaun Lock. Lock’s long throw allowed Harry Galeotti to score his second goal at the back post from close range.

Shaun Lock also created 1876’s ninth goal when he played the ball through for Corrig McGonigle. The prolific scorer took a touch before calmly netting his second goal of the game. With over ten minutes of the game still left, the prospect of Bangor reaching double figures loomed large.

A tenth goal did arrive as the match entered injury time. Substitute Dylan Williams played a neat pass right to Harry Galeotti. The winger’s cross was turned in at the back post by Liam Morris to complete his hat-trick and a ten goal win for 1876.
