Joe Shooman is from Bangor, has lived in the Cayman Islands, worked as a journalist and written several books about music. He is also passionate about Bangor 1876. Here is what he had to say recently about the season so far.
What was the first 1876 game you went to and what do you remember of it?
My first game was FC United of Manchester away. It was a brilliant day out, and a real inspiration as to what can be achieved by a club united and pulling in the same direction. The game itself was... well. It was a hiding wasn't it, but this was almost unimportant in the big scheme of things. I saw loads of people I'd not seen for ages, and spirits were very high. It felt like we'd got something back that had been ripped away from us. That goal by Benn was spawny as hell but the celebrations were incredible: the emotions all released at once. Absolute joy. It was our club again. 1876 is the embodiment of what a football club should be: community, unity, access for all, and above all something everyone has a stake in. There's no big sugar-daddies of dubious means. The players are local, and they know what it means to represent their home city. Fans, players, committee, staff - together again for the first time in many years. The heart was beating again. It's hard to describe it if someone doesn't get it, but what happens on the pitch is only one small part of the whole deal.
What have been your other highlights of the season so far?
I've been at a few games - I work most Saturdays now, boooooo! But you can't beat seeing Johno score his first goal in 11 years!!! The team of young, local talent playing such accomplished footy is all you could ever hope for. And the community strides the club has made are incredible. Inclusivity, mental health, footy for all... it's so exciting to see things building in the right way, and from the ground up. Beautiful, really.
You like your music and have been in several bands. Which songs would you like to hear on the new PA system at Treborth?
Bit of punk never does any harm does it? What I loved about FCUM was their pre-game gigs. That'd be great! You can't beat some Stax tho, it'd get everyone boogying. Just please no John ac Alun or any of that awful stuff we used to endure in the 80s at Farrar Road, bless the soul of the announcer from those days.
If you could change one thing about football, what would it be and why?
Transparency of ownership. 51% at least of all shares owned by fans, and non-negotiable. Financial doping has absolutely ruined the game - since the days of shamateurism. Nothing really changes does it?
