Cian Williams interview

Playing FIFA, partnering Johno and team haircuts

Central defender Cian Williams talks about the season so far, dealing with lockdown, and team spirit at Bangor 1876.

How have you been coping with the lack of football during lockdown?
It’s been quite hard if I’m honest, one of the main things I've been doing is playing FIFA against teammates and friends. And also playing football on my own in the garden has kept me going a bit.

What are you most looking forward to about when it's possible to resume football again?
I’m looking forward to seeing all the boys involved with the club and starting to win games again. It feels weird not having a game on a Saturday and I’m looking forward to having a football routine back again, so training in the week and a game at the weekend.

How would you describe Bangor 1876's season so far?
It’s been near perfect, we had a good run in the Welsh Cup and we’ve won every game in the league and are doing well in the other cups we are in. I just hope we get a chance to win these cups and attempt to continue our unbeaten streak in the league.

What's it been like playing alongside Michael Johnston in the centre of defence this season?
It’s been good, as someone who watched and supported him when I was young it’s a nice experience playing with someone who has such high standards. He’s guided me lot and I can’t thank him enough for that.

There's quite a mix of youth and experience among the players. Would you say the older ones have very different tastes in things like music and clothes?
I’d say we all relate to each other quite well but have very different fashion choices, also haircuts are quite a big difference and something not everyone agrees about within the team.

What have been your personal highlights of this season with Bangor 1876 and the Welsh Colleges team?
Personally, my highlight of the season was when we played Penycae in the Welsh Cup and came back from behind multiple times to win on penalties, we showed that day the spirit we have within the team and also the quality and determination. Also for the Welsh Colleges, it would be playing at St. George’s Park, quite a surreal experience.
