Talented young midfielder Cameron Barry talks about what it's like to play for his home town club and the season so far...
What's it like playing in a team with several teammates you've played with in youth football?
Playing with some of the lads that I’ve played youth football with helps a lot especially when playing because you understand their playing style. Also it’s healthy competition for us because if one of us is doing well it pushes everyone else to perform well.
Who would you say are the main characters in the Bangor 1876 squad?
I’d say the main characters in the squad are the older lads. Players like Johno, Les and Iwan are obviously big characters as they’ve been in big dressing rooms for most of their careers.
As someone from Bangor, what does it mean to play for Bangor 1876?
Being a Bangor lad playing for 1876 is like a dream come true. Playing for my home club makes me want to put everything into each game not only for the team but for the fans as well. The fans turn up week in week out to support us and you just want to do them proud being from Bangor. Growing up in Bangor everyone knew the likes of Jonno and Les and to be playing with them now is something you could only dream of.
What's it like playing in a team where your dad (Nigel Barry) is one of the coaches?
My dad being one of the coaches is a good thing because there’s always that motivation to try harder. He’s always giving me ways to help improve my game and giving me tips that he picked up throughout his career. My dad always tells me the truth about how I’ve played and sometimes as much as you don’t want to hear it, it’s the best thing to hear because it only makes you want to prove him wrong in the next training session or game.
Apart from football, what are your favourite sports?
I used to play a bit of cricket when I was younger just to keep me occupied over the summer when the football season was over but as the seasons are getting longer I don’t get a chance to play anymore.
What have been your highlights of the season so far?
There have been many highlights this season like Penycae at home, coming from behind to win on penalties. But I think the main highlight, especially for me, has to be against FC United. Walking out to all the travelling fans was a dream come true and I will cherish that moment forever.
